The Nutritional Science major combines a strong foundation in the biological and chemical sciences with specialized advanced coursework that focuses on nutrient/non-nutrient function and metabolism.

The application of this field informs recommendations for dietary patterns to achieve optimum health and the treatment or prevention of disease conditions, as well as food production and safety. This major can prepare students for careers in the health professions (e.g., dietetics, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry) as well as food production, biotechnology, education, research, and public health. Students apply for a track in Physiology & Metabolism, Molecular Toxicology, or Dietetics.

The aspect that makes this major really appealing to people might be the scientific background provided on why and how things should be done. Taking biochemistry and physiology classes, there were many instances when I realized that the reason why people were advised to eat in a certain way was explained. The selection of one of the three tracks forces one to determine his/her future right from the start. So whether you will work with patients or conduct your own research, it all depends on your choice and desire from the very beginning of the course.

This major is definitely for those who are interested in nutrition science rather than in popular trends.
